Hooray for Business Day!
1One of the most anticipated events during our 4th grade year is Business Day! Business Day occurs once each trimester (twice in the second trimester), and coincides with our monthly "Dojo-tique." As each Business Day nears, I will send home additional information and details, but here are some nuts and bolts to help you get an idea as to what it's all about:
* Per our classroom economy, students earn Dojo Dollars. Once a student has saved up $80, (s)he may choose to purchase a business license and work toward creating a business portfolio.
* Once a business license is obtained, permission is granted to the "business owner" to bring in handmade goods to sell on a designated "Business Day." (During Distance Learning - students will design an online storefront using iMovie, Google Slides, FlipGrid, or another self-selected platform to allow their peers to shop for products 'online'. Should Distance Learning continue past the date of our first scheduled Business Day, I will send home additional information about how to create and prepare for this online shopping format.)
** Students are encouraged to be creative in what they sell! Some of the most unique items
often become the popular ticket items! Students are encouraged to let their imagination drive their
creativity...items such as framed artwork, collectors cards, bookmarks, bracelets, posters, ornaments, sun
catchers, magnets, sand art candles, knitted scarves all make great items for sale. (Please note: Food items
and artisan items containing glass are not allowed due to allergy and safety reasons.)
* On Business Day, young entrepreneurs bring in their handmade creations to sell during the Dojo-tique in exchange for dojo dollars.
That's it!
While parents are encouraged to supervise and help, I strongly remind parents to remember that this is your child’s experience and it is up to him/her to do most of the creating. I also remind parents to not feel obligated to help with Business Day items if your child lets you know the night before the event. Pulling an all-nighter to finger knit fifty scarves really isn't necessary! Keep in mind that planning for Business Day is great practice in the art and skill of organization and planning!
