Purpose, Practice, and Assessment
In fourth grade, we focus on the development of word knowledge through the study of Latin and Greek roots, as well as prefixes and suffixes. As students move up in grade level, and begin to tackle text with greater complexity and language, it can be challenging to keep up! One of the best ways to help students take on this challenge, and increase both vocabulary and overall comprehension, is to learn about how words are put together. Our study of roots and affixes in 4th grade help students both recognize and understand the most common word parts in the English language. In turn, they learn how to break apart and examine words on their own - seeing patterns in language - giving them a lifelong literacy tool for reading and comprehending a wide variety of texts.
Word lists for each unit in our Open Court Reading program can be found here as well as in the Home Connect Page sent home in your child's weekly ELA packet. These words (in addition to the weekly vocabulary words) will be assessed weekly, as well as revisited and reassessed on unit and benchmark exams.
Students are expected to practice these words missed weekly as part of their Daily 5 Classroom ELA block, and at home using the spelling menu of activities included in the weekly ELA packet. Please have your child staple any completed activities pages to the ELA packet to be turned in each Friday.
